The portraits under the title of the blog are taken from the cover art of Enlightenment Contested, the second volume in Jonathan Israel's Enlightenment trilogy. From left to right: David Hume (1711-76); Gottfried Wilhem Liebniz (1646-1716), Benedictus (Baruch) Spinoza (1632-77); Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727); Francois-Marie-Arouet de Voltaire (1694-1778), and John Locke (1632-1704). A good number of the portraits used by Israel to adorn his three volumes are housed at the Herzog August Bibliothek, Wolfenbuttel.
